Undefined Conflict Resolution Anti-Pattern

Temptation
Formal grievance procedures seem unnecessary when “we all get along.” Leadership assumes conflicts can be handled privately or ad hoc.

Short-Term Effectiveness
Avoiding formal process saves time and spares awkwardness. Early disputes often do resolve informally — reinforcing the belief that no structure is needed.

Structural Flaws
When serious disagreements arise, there is no neutral mechanism to handle them. Officers improvise rulings, creating inconsistency and perceived bias. Emotional disputes turn procedural.

Long-Term Consequences
Trust decays, factions harden, and reputational damage follows when conflicts spill outside the organization. Members learn that fairness depends on who happens to be in charge.

Real-World Examples
Local clubs or nonprofit boards where expulsions or censures occur without hearings, triggering walkouts or social-media feuds.

Counter-Patterns
Implement Narrative Conflict Management to institutionalize hearing and appeal rights.
