Context
Systems occasionally face shocks that exceed their designed buffering capacity. Immediate collapse is undesirable, but permanent redesign may not yet be possible.
The system must survive overload without distorting itself.
Problem
How can a system absorb short-term variance when its primary buffer is insufficient, without increasing long-term load or suppressing corrective signals?

Solution

Preconditions for Healthy Operation
Adaptive Buffer Substitution functions as a pattern only if:
- Exit condition exists (explicit or implicit)
- Signals remain legible (stress is not normalized)
- No rent extraction (financial, political, cognitive)
- Reversibility is preserved
- Original buffer regeneration occurs
