An orientation to the NeuroSaeculum framework.

NeuroSaeculum is a framework that treats civilization as a nervous system. This means that we can sense symptoms, monitor them, diagnose them into issues, determine the probable cause of the issues and suggest possible treatments.

There’s a lot of work in those two sentences, so let’s break them down.

We’re not saying society is a person; we’re borrowing how human nervous systems work.

In a human, the scenario might be that you feel like you have a fever (symptom), so you go to the doctor and they take your temperature (monitor) and ask you some questions and then they say you have a cold (diagnose) and it’s probably because you went out into the rain without a coat (cause). The doctor then gives you a prescription for some medicine and tells you to wear your coat next time (treatments).

Civilization is simpler in one key way because, as a nervous system, we’re only concerned about stress.

Stress shows up in civilization in multiple and various ways. It’s there when unemployment is high, when corporations become monopolies, when governments discriminate against classes of people, just to name a few.

Once we understand where the stress is coming from, we can strip away the surface symptoms and find the root cause.

From there, we can suggest solutions based on patterns that have worked across history.
