Standard Structure for First Foundation Pattern Sequences
Purpose of This Page
This page defines the standard template used to document First Foundation Pattern Sequences and Anti-Pattern Sequences.
Pattern Sequences describe recurring progressions of interacting patterns and anti-patterns that commonly appear together in real systems. Where individual patterns describe structural mechanisms in isolation, sequences describe how those mechanisms interact over time and form recognizable causal pathways.
This page defines sequence structure only.
Why a Template Exists
Pattern Sequences are not essays or narrative summaries.
They are structural artifacts intended to be:
- reused across institutions and domains
- compared across assessments
- used in forensic and diagnostic analysis
- used to inform or refine Civic Topology causal links
Without a standardized template, sequences drift into:
- storytelling
- hindsight rationalization
- advocacy
- vague arrows without mechanisms
- implicit rather than explicit causality
The template enforces discipline.
Relationship to the Pattern Template
This template is derived from the standard First Foundation Pattern Template. Individual patterns define recurring structural mechanisms. Pattern Sequences define recurring progressions of interacting patterns and anti-patterns.
Pattern Sequences therefore sit one level above single patterns.
They are especially useful for:
- forensic analysis
- recurring failure pathways
- resilience pathways
- Civic Topology population
- identifying how structural dynamics propagate through institutions
Template Overview
Each Pattern Sequence entry is composed of six structural layers:

- Illustrative Material and Analytical Notes
Not all fields are required at the same maturity level.
Identity & Scope
Required for all sequences.
Includes:
- Sequence Name
- Sequence Type
- Pattern Sequence
- Anti-Pattern Sequence
- Maturity Status
- Proto-Sequence
- Working Sequence
- Confirmed Sequence
- Problem / Structural Condition Addressed
- Applicable Contexts
- Primary Domain(s)
- Non-Goals / Explicit Exclusions
This section prevents category confusion and scope creep.
Sequence Structure
Required for all sequences.
Includes:
- Component Patterns / Anti-Patterns
- Sequence Order
- Stage Notes (only where clarification is needed)
- Optional Branch Points / Alternate Paths (if needed)
The sequence should be presented explicitly.
Example:
Efficiency Optimization

This section describes what the sequence is, not why it happens.
Causal Pathway
Required for all Working and Confirmed Sequences.
This is the core of the sequence.
Includes:
- Named Causal Mechanisms
- Mechanism of Progression
- Escalation or Stabilization Logic
- Key Actors and Incentives (if relevant)
- Information Flows and Power Dynamics (if relevant)
This section explains why the sequence progresses.
Named causal mechanisms are explanatory connectors within the sequence. They do not automatically become Civic Topology issues or links.
This section must be:
- mechanism-focused
- non-narrative
- non-moral
If this section is weak, the sequence is not ready to be considered confirmed.
Failure Modes and Tradeoffs
Required for Confirmed Sequences and strongly encouraged for Working Sequences.
Includes:
- Failure Amplification Points
- Structural Lock-In Points
- Misclassification Risks
- Tradeoffs Introduced (if applicable)
- Conditions Under Which the Sequence Breaks Down or Reverses
This section captures what makes the sequence diagnostically useful rather than merely descriptive.
Civic Topology Relevance
Strongly encouraged.
Includes:
- Relevant Civic Topology Issues
- Relevant Civic Topology Causal Links
- Notes on how the sequence informs or refines issue-level relationships
Pattern Sequences often reveal causal mechanisms that may inform, refine, or justify Civic Topology links when those mechanisms map clearly onto issue-level relationships.
They do not transfer automatically into Civic Topology.
Illustrative Material and Analytical Notes
Optional and strictly constrained.
May include:
- historical examples
- hypothetical examples
- simple diagrams
- explanatory analogies
- analytical mode notes (Assessment / Scan / Forensics)
Narrative belongs here only.
Illustration clarifies structure. It does not establish evidence.
Proto-Sequence Exception
Proto-Sequences may be incomplete.
Minimum required:
- Identity & Scope
- Observed Sequence Structure
- Open Questions
Proto-Sequences are not safe for formal assessment use.
Quality Requirements
All Pattern Sequences must:
- separate sequence structure from illustration
- avoid ideology and policy advocacy
- avoid predictive claims
- explicitly state limits
- indicate maturity level
- identify component patterns or anti-patterns
- describe causal progression clearly enough to support structural analysis
Sequences that cannot meet these requirements should remain Proto-Sequences.
