Purpose
Document the previously informal NS News practice of developing an entry around a load-bearing structural argument before drafting the final prose.
The term spine has been used in two related but distinct ways:
- the underlying argument line; and
- the labeled pre-prose working artifact used during drafting and review.
Formalizing separate terms will remove that ambiguity, preserve the evidence discipline already used in practice, and make the NS News development process easier for future AI and human contributors to follow.
Settled Terminology
NS News Spine
The minimal, evidence-bounded argument that gives an NS News entry its structural coherence:
Event → Structural change or revelation → Mechanism → Significance
Every load-bearing link must be supported by available evidence.
A peripheral unresolved fact may remain in the Open Question. A load-bearing unresolved fact blocks publication of that spine unless the entry is restructured around a narrower supported claim.
Core Structural Center
The NS News Spine expressed as a single sentence before it is decomposed into its four links.
NS News Entry Skeleton
The labeled pre-prose working artifact used to develop, review, and hand off an entry before full drafting.
It may include:
- Working title
- Core structural center
- Hook
- Observed event or pattern
- Structural change or revelation
- Mechanism or NS Lens
- Why it matters
- Boundary
- Open question
- Closing line
These labels are drafting scaffolds and do not all need to survive as separate sections in the published entry.
NS News Entry Structure
The published form of an NS News entry:
- Hook
- Observed Pattern
- NS Lens
- Boundary Statement
- Optional Open Question
The Entry Structure contains and communicates the Spine. The Boundary Statement and Open Question qualify and test the Spine rather than adding further links to it.
Work Required
- Add the formal terminology and definitions to the NS News Report Creation activity.
- Include the evidence-bounded publication requirement.
- Include a worked example showing all four Spine links.
- Define the Core Structural Center as the Spine stated in one sentence.
- Explain the relationship among the Spine, Entry Skeleton, and Entry Structure.
- Clarify that “Why it matters” does not require a separate published section when the NS Lens already carries the significance link.
- Add a compact review test:
This event reveals or changes this structural condition; the condition operates through this mechanism; and it matters for this reason.
- Update the NS News methodology page to reference the operational definition.
- Review current canonical NS News documentation and reusable templates for ambiguous uses of spine.
Historical chat usage does not require retroactive correction unless it is being converted into durable documentation.
Completion Criteria
This task is complete when:
- the four terms are defined in canonical NS News documentation;
- the Evidence-Bounded Requirement is documented;
- at least one worked example is included;
- the NS News methodology page points to the operational definition;
- current reusable templates use the settled terminology consistently; and
- future contributors can distinguish the argument line, one-sentence thesis, working draft artifact, and published entry form without relying on chat history.
Notes
- Use Reflecting Pool and When the Plaintiff Controls the Defense as worked examples.
- Document the IRS entry as a case where the evidence-bounded gate corrected the spine before drafting.
- Document the overbuilt skeleton as a case where product-resolution discipline forced a return from article scale to NS News scale.
- Preserve the rule that proposed terminology is subordinate to evidence from actual use.
- Include the legacy sweep for older uses of spine that meant the full skeleton rather than the core structural center.
