Brainrot Is What a Cortisol-Dominant Civilization Feels Like

Why Our Information Breakdown Is Real — and Still Not Permanent

Joan Westenberg is right about one big thing:

Something is broken in how we process reality.

We have:

  • People living in totally different information universes
  • Tribal pattern-matching instead of curiosity
  • Viral content treated as proof of civilizational collapse
  • Algorithmic feeds tuned to outrage, fear, and loyalty
  • A steady erosion of any shared sense of “what’s actually true”

She calls it brainrot.

From a NeuroSaeculum standpoint, that’s the subjective experience of something deeper:

We are living in a cortisol-dominant civilization — a nervous system stuck in chronic threat mode.

And that matters, because systems in threat mode behave very differently than systems in recovery mode.

Brainrot isn’t just a media problem.
It’s a phase of a stressed civilization’s nervous system.

And phases change.


1. What Westenberg Gets Exactly Right

Strip away the anecdotes and she’s describing a very specific pattern:

  • Algorithms removed friction and gatekeeping
    Information went from “slow, filtered, imperfect” to “instant, unfiltered, weaponized.”
  • The feeds are tuned to emotional triggers
    Outrage, fear, moral disgust, tribal belonging. Calm isn’t profitable.
  • Context died
    Everything flows through the same slot: a war, a cat video, a genocide, a celebrity feud.
  • Curiosity collapsed
    There’s no time to say “I don’t know yet” when the discourse flips every 6 hours.
  • People now think in prefab arguments
    You can hear the tweet cadence in how they talk. Memes first, reality second.
  • Shared reality fractured
    Different bubbles, different “facts,” same planet.

None of that is exaggerated.

From a NeuroSaeculum point of view, she’s describing what happens when you wire a civilization’s Cortex layer (its information-processing system) directly into the worst parts of Hidden Circuitry (its threat response).

We built a machine that monetizes cortisol.

And then we fed the entire species into it.


2. The Missing Word: Cortisol

Westenberg keeps describing the symptoms:

  • Doomscrolling compulsion
  • Chronic anxiety
  • Constant sense of crisis
  • Hyper-reactivity
  • Shortened attention and time horizons

She never names the mechanism:

This is exactly what a cortisol-dominant nervous system looks like at scale.

In Hidden Circuitry terms:

  • Acute threat → short spike of cortisol → action → return to baseline
  • Chronic threat → sustained cortisol → perception of danger everywhere → cognitive narrowing

Now map that onto a whole civilization:

  • Constant “threats” in the feed
  • No recovery window
  • Every day is a fresh outrage
  • No “off” switch

The result:

  • We literally feel like the world is collapsing, even when specific claims (e.g., “Sweden has fallen”) are numerically nonsense.
  • The brain uses availability instead of proportionality: “I’ve seen 20 videos of X this month” becomes “X is everywhere.”

Westenberg is describing the phenomenology of cortisol dominance without the word.

That matters, because if you don’t understand the mechanism, you assume it’s permanent.


3. Crisis-Phase Information Systems Are Supposed to Look Terrible

This part will sound counterintuitive, but stay with me.

Historically, whenever a civilization enters a Crisis phase, its information environment gets ugly:

  • Late 19th century: yellow journalism, sensationalist pamphlets, conspiracy newspapers
  • 1930s: radio demagogues, fascist propaganda, rumor-driven panics
  • Late 20th century: cable outrage cycles, talk radio escalation

What we call “brainrot” is the networked, real-time, ad-tech version of something that keeps happening:

Under high stress, societies trade accuracy for urgency and tribal coherence.

They:

  • Prefer simple stories over complex realities
  • Reward loyalty over curiosity
  • Treat nuance as betrayal
  • Polarize their epistemology: “our facts” vs “their lies”

Westenberg’s whole essay can be summarized as:

“The Crisis-phase epistemic failure has gone global and real-time.”

True.

But in the NeuroSaeculum model, that’s a phase property, not an endpoint.

Crisis phases end.

The mood structure changes.

The threat system relaxes.

And when that happens, information norms change too.


4. Algorithms Didn’t Hypnotize Us — They Weaponized a Crisis

There’s a comforting story that says:

“We were doing fine until social media broke our brains.”

No. We were already sliding into Crisis.

Social media did three very specific things:

  1. Removed friction
    • No editors, fact-checkers, or time delays
    • Publishing and consuming became instantaneous
  2. Optimized for cortisol
    • Engagement = survival in the attention market
    • Threat, outrage, and disgust are high-engagement states
    • So the feeds learned to serve you more of what keeps you on edge
  3. Collapsed layers
    • Personal, political, global, trivial — all in one feed
    • The nervous system can’t tell the difference between “my friend’s rant” and “democracy ending”

So yes, the platforms made specific design choices that amplified all of this.

But those choices landed in a system that was already:

  • Inequality-riddled
  • Trust-degraded
  • Politically polarized
  • Institutionally brittle

In NS terms, we plugged high-gain amplifiers into a Crisis-phase nervous system.

Of course the result looks deranged.


5. Westenberg’s Darkest Point — and Where I Break With Her

Her scariest line is this one:

“We’re watching the mass degradation of human cognitive capacity… and we’re only beginning to understand the implications.”

She’s not wrong about the degradation.

Where I part ways is the implied trajectory:
that brainrot is a one-way slide.

NeuroSaeculum’s position is harsher and more hopeful at the same time:

  1. Yes, cognitive capacity degrades under chronic cortisol.
    • Threat mode favors tribalism, not truth
    • Executive function and long-horizon thinking do get suppressed
  2. No, that state is not stable.
    • Systems cannot remain in extreme Crisis indefinitely
    • They either:
      • collapse, or
      • transition to a different phase (Renewal / High)
  3. When the phase shifts, the information norms shift.
    • Threat narratives lose their grip
    • People literally get bored of permanent emergency
    • The emotional market starts rewarding different signals (competence, reliability, coherence)

In other words:

Brainrot is not our destiny. It’s our symptom profile during a specific kind of civilizational panic attack.

The panic can still kill you.

But it is not the whole story.


5.1 What Westenberg Can’t See: Crisis Ends When Renewal Begins

Westenberg describes the phenomenology of a civilization stuck in cortisol-mode — the fragmentation, the fear-sharpened narratives, the collapse of shared reality. What she cannot see from inside the moment is that cortisol phases do not last indefinitely.

Human nervous systems always resolve crisis-state activation in one of two ways:

  1. System collapse, or
  2. Transition into Renewal.

Every past Crisis in modern history follows the same arc:

  • Panic and epistemic chaos
  • Threat-load exhaustion
  • A sudden widening of attention
  • Curiosity returning
  • Coalitions re-forming
  • Institutions regaining legitimacy
  • A new shared reality crystallizing

This hinge point is what the NeuroSaeculum framework calls the Renewal Window — the serotonin rebound that follows a long cortisol-dominant phase.

In practical terms:

Brainrot is not the new normal.
Brainrot is what a civilization’s panic attack feels like.

Once the panic begins to burn out, the emotional economy flips:

  • Curiosity becomes safe again
  • People tolerate ambiguity
  • “Let me think about this” stops feeling like betrayal
  • Cooperation becomes possible
  • Long-term thinking reappears

This isn’t optimism — it’s biology.
Cortisol cannot stay elevated at civilization scale forever.

The chaos Westenberg describes isn’t our destiny.
It’s our phase.


6. What Happens After the Cortisol Era: The Shift That Westenberg Couldn’t Name

Here is the part Westenberg couldn’t see, because she doesn’t have the neurochemical lens:

Cortisol phases end. They always end.
Human systems cannot remain in emergency vigilance forever. The biology won’t allow it. And when the collective threat response finally breaks, something reliably happens next:

Serotonin reasserts itself. Curiosity becomes safe again. Attention widens. Time horizons lengthen.

This isn’t abstract theory — we can already see the early recovery signals in Gen-Z, a generation Westenberg implicitly treats as lost to brainrot:

  • The analog revival (film cameras, vinyl, mechanical watches) is a rejection of algorithmic speed.
  • Dumb phones and minimal-tech trends are a rejection of constant digital stimulation.
  • The rise of longform video essays and dense commentary channels is a counter-movement against hyperviral content.
  • The return of third places — cafés, maker spaces, reading clubs — is a rejection of loneliness and digital dissociation.
  • Their politics show stronger preferences for repair, regulation, and stabilization compared to Millennials at the same age.

These aren’t nostalgia fads. They are neurocognitive self-corrections, the same kind that appeared after every major panic-cycle in modern history.

The information ecosystem hasn’t shifted yet — platforms are still metabolizing our cortisol — but the people using the ecosystem are already beginning to shift. That is the precursor pattern every past Crisis has shown.

Brainrot is not permanent.
It is a phase in a cycle.
And we are already seeing the first signals of its exit ramp.
